Ever since Railcraft Associates Ltd
was established in 1988 the core business of the company
has been the design and development of railway locomotives
and rolling stock. In order to support this core business
and respond to increasingly demanding customer expectations
the company continually introduces new skills and resources,
principally computer-based, including a sophisticated structural
analysis feature.
The type of analysis available at
Railcraft ranges from the industry specific formal axle
stress calculations to UK Network Rail Standards, to four
mode Finite Element fatigue analysis - a recent example
being a marine pipe installation system. We are always pleased
to discuss with prospective clients any aspect of their
structural analysis problems and where possible to offer
our modular range of highly competitive engineering solutions.

Railcraft has fully
integrated the use of Finite Element Analysis into the design
process for use at all stages of product development. Seamless
automated file transfer between modeling suites means that
component revisions can be tested with the utmost efficiency
and the results incorporated straight into the next design
revision. This level of integration allows the design to be
an optimal balance of form, function and ease of manufacture
and to this end Railcraft maintains close working relationships
with machinists, fabricators and assemblers to ensure that
Railcraft designs take advantage of the very latest production
methods. |

The analysis software
of choice is COSMOS Design STAR. In addition to its award-winning
structural capabilities, COSMOS Design STAR offers a wide range
of advanced analysis options including nonlinear, temperature dependent
material, electromagnetic and frequency analysis. Railcraft can
provide these additional facilities in addition to our structural
analysis capability. |

As with any professional
analysis tool, an in-depth understanding of the problem is
necessary in order to use the tools effectively. Each of our
analysis engineers is degree-qualified in the fundamentals
of engineering science and the behaviour of materials, and
all degree courses are accredited by the UK Institution of
Mechanical Engineers. Externally, close ties with The University
of Sheffield provide an almost limitless depth of experience,
which coupled with our extensive in-house knowledge base and
wide experience over many years makes Railcraft Associates
an optimal choice for engineering analysis. |

Finally, as experienced
product development engineers our service doesn't stop here.
For clients whose needs go beyond structural analysis we can
offer advice and recommendations on alternative methods of
experimental techniques, including photo elasticity, holographic/speckle
interferometry, thermo elasticity and extensometry (strain
gauge configurations). These may be more applicable in the
fields of reverse engineering, failure analysis or component
validation rather than new product design, yet we would be
pleased to offer recommendations on any of methods listed. |
